Social Emotional Learning

Becker Elementary is proud to implement a Social Emotional Learning program as part of the Austin Independent School District’s focus on educating the whole child. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) teaches the skills we all need to handle ourselves, our relationships, and our work effectively and ethically. These skills include recognizing and managing our emotions, developing caring and concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively and ethically.

Our Becker Bobcats all participate in weekly social emotional learning lessons, in which our wonderful staff teach critical life skills. In addition to the lessons, our Becker teaching staff integrate social emotional learning into all aspects of the day, including at daily morning assembly. Our Becker community also participates in the Compassion Games, which focus on global unity, throughout the year. Students and staff work on demonstrating compassion for self, others, and the earth and draw awareness to these acts that lead naturally to their replication. This year, our compassion games will culminate on the United Nations International Day of Peace, which we’ll celebrate with Peace through Pie. These initiatives support students’ living by our Becker Guidelines for Success (Perseverance, Responsibility, Respect) and are part of the Bobcat identity. Students are recognized for displaying these at morning assembly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
